The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that Repetitive Motion injuries, now named “Musculoskeletal disorders” make up 35% of all workplace injuries.
So, why the new name? It’s because they describe the tissue involved not the cause. These injuries can happen when there is repetitive work, but also from a prolonged position or posture.
Musculoskeletal Disorders Include:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Golfer’s or tennis elbow
- Rotator cuff tendonitis
- Low back and neck pain
Common reasons these occur:
- Overuse of a muscle or muscle group
- Forceful activities or direct pressure to an area
- Holding the same poor posture for prolonged periods
Symptoms:
- Pain, burning or aching in muscles, joints or nerves
- Muscle fatigue or weakness
- Soreness or spasm
- Numbness and tingling
