How to Avoid Repetitive Motion Injuries at Work

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that Repetitive Motion injuries, now named “Musculoskeletal disorders” make up 35% of all workplace injuries.

So, why the new name?  It’s because they describe the tissue involved not the cause. These injuries can happen when there is repetitive work, but also from a prolonged position or posture.

Musculoskeletal Disorders Include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Golfer’s or tennis elbow
  • Rotator cuff tendonitis
  • Low back and neck pain

Common reasons these occur:

  • Overuse of a muscle or muscle group
  • Forceful activities or direct pressure to an area
  • Holding the same poor posture for prolonged periods

Symptoms:

  • Pain, burning or aching in muscles, joints or nerves
  • Muscle fatigue or weakness
  • Soreness or spasm
  • Numbness and tingling
