The Natural Pain Killer

Movement is key to our overall health.

When we have aches and pains it’s easy to just stop doing everything because it helps ease our discomfort. However, if we sit stagnant for too long, our aches and pains can become much more prevalent in the areas we originally felt them but also may translate to other parts of the body; we become stiff and tight throughout our joints and muscles. When we have pain not only does our body feel it, but it affects our mind as well. Aches and pains can prevent us from doing the things we love. They can keep us from getting out and seeing our friends and family, playing with our kids and grandkids. Aches and pains can prevent us from doing the hobbies we love; walking, hiking, gardening, etc.  If we can’t get out and do the things we enjoy our mental state takes a hit. Stress and/or depression can start to set in and take its toll on us, so one of the best things we can do to combat this is to keep moving.

When you exercise, the body releases endorphins, the “feel good” chemicals which act as natural pain killers – who knew?  The more we move the more often endorphins are released the less pain we tend to feel.  Regular exercise is one of the best methods of stress relief.  While exercise promotes a focus on the body, concentrating on the rhythm of the movements can have similar effects as meditation for your mind. This focus can promote a sense of optimism, clarity, and increased energy. You may even notice an improvement in your mood after working out. By keeping up with a regular exercise routine, these sensations of optimism and well-being will continue to rise.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends getting at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week (walking, biking, swimming, etc.).

That’s only 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week! The AHA also recommends doing at least two sessions of muscle strengthening into your weekly routine. All of the major muscle groups should be included into this plan.

If you’re feeling any aches or pains that are preventing you from living the way you want to, please give us a call and set up a FREE consultation so one of our physical therapists can give you direction of what you’ll need to do to become pain free.
