Three tips for managing back pain at home

We’ve all experienced back pain at some point or another in our lives. It often happens when you’ve been sitting for too long or if you’ve been lifting heavy objects with poor posture. Many cases of back pain are not serious and are treatable with some rest and home treatments. However, serious back pain requires much more.

When back pain is severe, long-lasting or accompanied by other symptoms, you may need medical assistance. Many people with back pain visit physical therapists for treatments because physical therapists specialize in treating conditions that affect your bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints.

In cases of minor back pain though, you should be fine after a few days by following the advice below.

Three tips for managing back pain at home

  1. Rest — If your back is sore after a hard day of working or sitting for too long, you should find an opportunity to rest. Do not force yourself to push through the pain as this could cause greater problems that will require professional treatment.

Also, do not rest for too long. It’s good to take the pressure off your spine for a few hours, but you need to get up and move around some to keep your muscles and connective tissues strong and flexible if you want the pain to go away.

  1. Practice good posture — Poor sitting, standing and sleeping posture are often the culprits of back pain. Keep your back straight, your head up and avoid sitting for too long. If you work somewhere that requires you to sit for long periods of time, make sure you get up to stretch and walk at least every hour.
  1. Exercise and stretch — Yeah, we said resting is important, but stretching and exercising can help build muscles that support your spine and reduce back pain. Do not push yourself too hard exercising when you’re in pain because you may make the pain worse. Focus on light exercises and activities that can help build muscles without causing harm. Talk to your doctor or a physical therapist about exercises that may be right for you.
